ATO Fast-Tracks Objection, Promises Review Within 24 Months

ISSUE NO. 2

CANBERRA — The Australian Taxation Office has proudly announced a new “fast-track” system for taxpayer objections, cutting the usual timeframe from five years down to a “streamlined” 18–24 months.

“Taxpayers told us they wanted faster outcomes, and we’ve listened,” said an ATO spokesperson. “Now you can get closure on your dispute in less than the gestation period of an elephant.”

Critics, however, argue the measure falls short of true efficiency. “It’s only fast compared to geological time,” said one tax agent, who is considering leaving the profession before the objection is resolved.

The ATO has defended the new process, pointing out that the fast-track pile comes with a complementary “your matter is important to us” postcard sent annually. Treasury is reportedly investigating whether similar initiatives could be applied to processing Freedom of Information requests by 2030.
